General Chess Questions
How do I Castle?
Castling is a special move involving the king and a rook. To castle, move the king two squares towards the rook, and then move the rook to the square next to the king. Conditions: neither piece has moved before, no pieces between them, and the king is not in check or moving through check.
What is ‘en passant’?
‘En passant’ is a special pawn capture. If a pawn moves two squares forward from its starting position and lands beside an opponent’s pawn, the opponent’s pawn can capture it as if it had moved only one square forward.
What is stalemate?
Stalemate occurs when a player has no legal moves and their king is not in check. This results in a draw.
What is the best opening in chess?
There is no single “best” opening, as it depends on your playing style and preferences. Each has its own strengths and strategic ideas. ChessWins recommends playing a queen’s pawn opening, specifically the Colle system.
